By morphology

The tissue of basic cancer groups has many special morphological characteristics. They can be observed by microscope, with additional staining or with other techniques. Pathologists group morphology characteristics in several groups and classify them according to special classifications. These characteristics often influence the course of disease and treatment outcome.

International Classification of Diseases for Oncology is the most widely used classification that has also the morphology part. The last, third edition was published in 2000; in the cancer registry of RS it is in use since 2001. The number of new cancer cases by morphology groups is regularly published in our Annual Reports.
