Detailed epidemiologic studies

The cancer burden in entire Slovenia as well as in its individual statistical regions is monitored routinely through Epidemiology and Cancer Registry unit. The SLORA software enables preparing data to the level of administrative units.

Occasionally, the professional or the lay public need to develop a closer understanding of the cancer burden on small geographic areas. Such projects require special methodological and organizational approaches. Results and interpretations of small area geographical analyses are at the end of the study delivered to the contractor, but the final reports are also available to other interested public.

In recent years we have also prepared:

  • an analysis of the potential impact of waste co-incineration on cancer burden and its possible association with exposure to selected pollutants in Anhovo, carried out within the framework of the Targeted Research Project V3-2236;
  • an analysis of the impact of radon exposure on lung cancer incidence in Slovenia, commisioned by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian Radiation Protection Administration (2022);
  • at the initiative of the Agency for Radioactive Waste Management of Republic of Slovenia detailed analysis of the cancer burden in the Brežice municipality, with an emphasis on the difference in the risk before and after Krško nuclear power plant is in operation;
  • at the initiative of the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Public Health Ljubljana analysis of the cancer burden in Zasavje region, with an emphasis on the impact of major industrial polluters;
  • at the initiative of the Institute of Public Health Celje analysis of the cancer burden in Celje and Šentjur pri Celju administrative units, with an emphasis on the impact of heavy metals pollution.
