Incidence describes new cases of a disease in the observed population; mortality refers to deaths; and prevalence refers to the total number of patients with a specific disease. Incidence and mortality relate to a specific time period, typically a calendar year, while prevalence usually refers to the number of people alive on the last day of the year.
