International Data

The data collected in the Slovenian Cancer Registry are included in many international databases, which enables comparisons with other European countries as well as on a global scale. On this page, we present three major cancer information systems:

European Cancer Information System (ECIS)  Global Cancer Observatory (GCO)  Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5)

ECIS (European Cancer Information System)

The European Cancer Information System (ECIS) provides comparable statistical indicators to quantify the cancer burden across Europe. It permits the exploration of geographical patterns and temporal trends of cancer incidence, prevalence, mortality, and survival. It was developed in collaboration by the JRC, DG SANTE and ENCR.

The web application allows detailed filtering of data using the following modules:

  • Estimates - This module displays projected incidence and mortality estimates for leading cancers in European countries for the current period (e.g. the year 2024) derived from predictive models. Figures may differ from observed data or estimates produced by national authorities due to variations in data sources and estimation methods. Data can be viewed by country or by region, sex, cancer site, and indicator.
  • Long Term Estimates - Estimates of incidence and mortality up to 2050 according to different population scenarios for leading cancers in European countries (source: EUROSTAT).
  • Historical Data - Observed incidence and mortality over time by cancer entity and demographic variables in European cancer registration areas based on reporting from cancer registries. 
  • Surival - Estimated relative survival by cancer entity and sex across European countries and time.
  • Prevalence - Estimated prevalence by cancer entity and sex across European countries and time.
  • Childhood Data - A dedicated module focusing on the incidence and survival of children and adolescents (ages 0–19), where cancer types are classified according to the International Classification of Childhood Cancer (ICCC-3).

In each module, you can use the “Export” button to download data in CSV or Excel format, allowing you to carry out your own data analyses. You can also save each graph as an image for use in reports or presentations. Explanations of the indicators and glossary are also available.

The ECIS web application displays aggregated results deriving from various studies based on data submitted by cancer registries affiliated to the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR): the Cancer in Five Continents (CI5) project, mortality data from the World Health Organization, mortality and demographic data from EUROSTAT, and the EUROCARE-5 studies (prevalence and survival).

GCO (Global Cancer Observatory)

Global Cancer Observatory (GCO) is an interactive web-based platform presenting global cancer statistics to inform cancer control and cancer research. It uses data from various projects within the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Cancer Surveillance Unit (CSU). These include projects such as GLOBOCAN, Cancer in Five Continents (CI5), the International Incidence of Childhood Cancer (IICC), and Cancer Survival in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Central America (SurvCan). 

The GCO provides following data visualization tools:

  • Cancer Today provides estimates of incidence, mortality, and prevalence for 36 types of cancer in 185 countries and territories. The latest estimates for 2022 are currently available. The options for selecting indicators, standardisation methods, sex, cancer sites, age groups, geographic regions, and so on depend on the visualisation method you choose. Under the Dataviz tab, you can see which type of graph is best suited to the type of data or comparison you wish to display. Under Data & Methods, you will find an explanation of the indicators used and a list of cancer types and populations. A collection of fact sheets on cancer and populations is also available.
  • Cancer Tomorrow provides projected incidence and mortality for a specific country or region, ranging from current estimates for 2018 through to 2040. The projections are calculated based on GLOBOCAN 2018 data, which are presented in GCO: Cancer today. The calculations assume that incidence and mortality estimates for individual countries will remain unchanged between 2020 and 2040, and that population growth projections established in 2018 will hold true; this should be taken into account when interpreting the results.
  • Cancer Causes provides estimated global burden of cancer attributable to specific causes. It currently examines four risk factors that influence cancer incidence: obesity, infections, alcohol, and UV radiation.
  • The Cancer survival module consists of a section on high-income countries (Survmark) and a section on developing and transition countries (Survcan).
  • Cancer Over Time focuses on historical data and long-term trends in incidence and mortality. It allows analysis of how rates of specific cancers have changed over the decades in various cancer registries around the world.

CI5 (Cancer Incidence in 5 Continents)

Cancer Incidence in Five Continents's (CI5) main objective is as an exposition of comparable cancer incidence data from all parts of the globe. CI5 compiles high-quality statistics on cancer incidence from population-based cancer registries around the world. The monograph is updated and published periodically from 1966 on by IACR

Analytic tools for examining incidence within or across volumes are available on the dedicated CI5 2.0 data visualisation tool. Analytic tools are divided into three sections: 

The principle for selecting display parameters is the same for all sections. When viewing data for a single volume, select the desired volumes; the most recent is XII, covering the period 2013–2017. Next, select the type of graphical display and specify whether you want to sort the data by cancer type or by geographic area. You can also specify the cancer burden indicator, sex, age, and cancer type, or the geographic area and time period.

Other international databases on cancer and public health

WHO cancer mortality: provides data on cancer mortality over an extended period in many countries around the world.

ACCIS (Automated Childhood Cancer Information System): provides data on the incidence and survival of children with cancer collected by European cancer registries.

IICC: provides data on the incidence of cancer in children around the world in the IARC Scientific Publications series.

CONCORD: provides data for worldwide surveillance of trends in cancer survival for 18 of the most common cancers at a global level.

RarecareNET: a network providing data on rare cancers in 27 countries.

IARC Monographs Database on Carcinogenic Risks to Human: identifies and reports on environmental factors that increase the risk of cancer in humans.

European Health for All Database (HFA-DB): a collection of basic health statistics that includes demographic data, data on health status, health determinants and risk factors, as well as health care resources and expenditure for 53 countries in the region.

Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER): the primary source of cancer statistics in the United States.

Eurostat: provides detailed statistics on European Union member states and candidate countries.

EUROCARE: provides data on survival, and prevalence of cancer patients in Europe.
